Notes

The diary documents daily activities of William Dall, including his work along the coast of Alaska of 1873 -1874 while working for the United States Coast Survey (USCS). Entries are chronological, headed with the date, and are listed on the left hand side of the notebook for the first half of the diary. Notes, calculations, or illustrations are usually on the right hand side. Entries detail weather, daily activities, observed flora and fauna (i.e. quantity and types of fish found in waters), measurements,. Many of the measurements and calculations focus on three mountains: Fairweather, Edgecomb [Edgecumbe], and Crillon. Other locations include the vicinity of Port Mulgrave and Chignik Bay.
