Notes

In 1904, Alexander Wetmore records details about collected specimens (numbers 318-598) and observations of birds in Wisconsin (August - November 23) and Kansas (November 27 - December 1). Entries are chronological and begin with the date. If specimens are collected, numbers are listed with the the bird's name (scientific or common), collector, appearance, sex, stomach contents, location, and measurements. Additional information is given in a journal style entry, usually consisting of details about traps placed, nests seen, weather and conditions when specimens are collected, and with whom he ventured out. Along the left-hand side of entries, Wetmore lists specimen numbers and names of birds (scientific and common) for quick-reference. He collects and observes in the woods, fields, and wetlands of the areas in North Freedom and Baraboo (Wisconsin) as well as Independence, Kansas. Several locations are visited repeatedly, and are often referred to by landmark or landowner's name. Other collectors listed include Herb Parkhurst, W. Link, John Hackett, and A.B. Stout. The notebook was compiled when Wetmore was 18.
