Journal entries with observations from Eyerdam's time collecting on the Whitney South Sea Expedition from 1929 to 1930. These notes were compiled and edited into this volume from original material by Museum personnel. During this time, he collected specimens from various locales in Melanesia including Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. Eyerdam had a particular interest in the collecting of shells.

Walter Eyerdam was considered one the the twentieth century's greatest collectors of mollusks, plants, birds and mammals.
