Notes
Folder of Palearctic Migratory Bird Survey (PMS) laboratory forms for specimens collected in Israel. From the finding aid (SIA RU000435): "The Palearctic Migratory Bird Survey (PMS), a survey of migratory birds, their ectoparasites and the viruses they carry, was conducted in the eastern Mediterranean from 1966 to 1971. The primary PMS operation site was in northern Egypt. Surveys were also conducted in Cyprus and Israel. The PMS involved scientists of the Smithsonian Institution, the United States Naval Medical Research Unit, and Yale University, and was funded by the Army Research Office, the Smithsonian Foreign Currency Program, and the Smithsonian Research Foundation. George E. Watson, Chairman, Department of Vertebrate Zoology, and Curator, Division of Birds, National Museum of Natural History, was Principal Investigator". Surveys were also conducted in Uganda. The forms in this folder show the observed bird species, the date of collection or processing, the location, the name of the preparator, and data such as sex, age, weight, fat, molt, in particular noting the presence or absence of ectoparasites as well as additional remarks on the aspect of the bird's body and plumage. The way the bird was processed or disposed of is noted: the first part of the folder records skins; the second part, birds kept in alcoholic solution; the third and last part, skeletons. The forms are numbered: S-1 to S-66, A-1 to A-61, X-1 to X-32.
