This field book includes the field notes of geologist Louis Lamy Ray from 1930 and 1932. The book, a Keuffel & Esser Co. graph paper book bound in leather, is stamped on its cover with the title "Cross section 375 S" and has tables for excavations and distances pasted as end papers. Its pages are covered in pencil notes, starting from each end of the book for each year of research. The first part is related to Ray's work on his master's thesis problem when he was studying in the Department of Geology of Washington University in Saint Louis. The preliminary page is inscribed "Louis L. Ray, Dept. of Geology Washington Univ. If lost, please return." The first page is titled "Master thesis problem. Natural bonded molding sands of the Owensboro, Indiana-Kentucky quadrangle." These notes are dated Monday , August 25, 1930 to July 18, 1932. They record the morphology of studied areas and collected samples. The pages are numbered from 1 to 14, followed by a few unnumbered pages listing expenses. An advertisement card is inserted between pp. 8-9; four leaves of notes are inserted after the last list of expenses, and followed by a list of pictures The second part, starting from the end of the book, includes notes from a different hand, mentioning Fredericktown, MO, and dated from August 2nd to August 4th, 193. After a few blank pages is inserted a newspaper clipping, titled "Studies land formation, advances new theory" on Gerard Fowke's study of the Ohio Valley. On the preliminary page is inscribed "Marshall Inman". At end are inserted a stamp and a fragment of map of the western United States.
