The diary is contained in a black leather, loose-leaf, three-ring notebook, with 120 pages of text and 12 p. of variosu names and addresses. Title on label on cover: China, 1917, Am. Mus., return Shanghai Pekin to US.

This diary recounts Edmund Heller{u2019}s travels on his solo return journey after participating in the First Asiatic Zoological Expedition. Entries discuss the sites and architecture, observations about the local flora and fauna, weather, the culture and people, and goods for sale. They also describe his social engagements and the various institutions he visited during his travels. Locations mentioned include Shanghai, Peking, Seoul, Yokohama, Tokyo, Honolulu and Berkeley, Stanford and San Francisco in California.

Mammalogist. Collector of small mammals on the First Asiatic Expedition of the AMNH, 1916-1917. Heller joined Andrews in Fukien, China, in July-Aug. 1916, then left via Hong Kong through Yunnan and then north through Tibet and the headwaters of the Yangtze River.
