Notes
The journal documents Vernon Orlando Bailey's collecting of mammal and bird specimens in Colorado, South Dakota, and Wyoming, 1888. Entries are dated, and begin with location and travel (including travel via rivers, accommodations). Details include descriptions of the effect of heavy rains on area rivers (Elk and Minnesota), state of flowering trees in area (per type of tree), weather, temperature, collecting methods, and observations of wildlife in their habitat (in midst of collecting). Specimen types are often listed with common name. Many of these were gophers and prairie dogs as well as other rodents. Locations include Fort Pierre, O'Neill (on Niobrara), Buffalo Gap, South Dakota; North Park, Colorado; Cheyenne, Wyoming.
