The journal documents Vernon Orlando Bailey's collecting mammal and bird specimens with Edward A. Preble in Colorado, Idaho, Oregon, Wyoming, May 14 - September 1896. Entries are dated and describe specimen collecting and travel. Entries May 14 - July 20 were written by Bailey. Second section (July 17 - September 29) by E. A. Preble. About a third of the notebook is blank. Bailey's entries are dated and headed with location. They detail travel details, route, daily activities and times of day, terrain (lava beds), vegetation, specimens collected, local vegetation consumed (camas), and weather. Locations indicate American Falls, Idaho; Ochoco River, Oregon; Elgin, Pendleton, Snake River, Rock Creek, John Day River (state unidentified). Preble's entries cover much the same details. Locations indicate Blue mountains, Beaner marsh and Drummond Lake (state unidentified); Fort Klamath, Oregon. Entries are signed. Entries document collecting of and C. H. Merriam.
