Notes

This diary documents William Cashman Ferguson's botanical observations in Long Island, New York from October 7, 1920-August 10, 1921. The book contains entries from Ferguson's walks and travels throughout Long Island. He notes names of plants observed and/or collected, date, location, and observations on flowering time and other descriptive details about plants and habitats. Ferguson began to number his specimens in this notebook, beginning with the May 10, 1921 entry. Specimen numbers included are 1-660. Ferguson (1861-1930) received a PhD in Chemistry from Columbia University, and specialized in applied chemistry with a particular interest in metallurgy. Late in life, he became interested in botany, particularly the flora of Long Island, about which he wrote several articles for the Bulletin of the Torrey Botanical Club.
