Notes

This field book contains notes on Mearns's research in Arizona and New Mexico. Mearns was the medical officer in charge of the third and tenth regiments of the U.S. Calvary exchanging stations between the Departments of Arizona and Texas. Mearns submitted a report on the zoology of this region to the surgeon general. The notebook begins with a catalog of birds taken during this trip, collector numbers 3836-4071, followed by a catalog of mammals taken, collector numbers 168-227, followed by measurements of specimens not preserved. These catalogs are followed by the narrative and itinerary of the expedition which include lists of plants, birds, mammals, and other animals seen. Localities include but are not limited to Ash Creek, Bumble Bee, Fort Yuma, Casa Grande, Maricopa, Gage (New Mexico), San Simon (AZ), and Desert Station. Includes letters to Mearns from Benjamin F. Pope (7/16/1885) and John S. Billings, curator of the Army Medical Museum (7/17/1885) inserted after the entry for May 20, 1885. "Notes on a Trip from Fort Verde, Arizona, to Flagstaff, Arizona, and back," June 18-June 22, 1886, with the following collector numbers is included: 420-428 (mammals); 4903-4911 (birds); reptiles listed without collector numbers).
