The journal documents Vernon Orlando Bailey's fieldwork in New York, Pennsylvania, April 27 - May 15, 1931. Bailey was the chief naturalist for the Biological Survey. Entries are dated and describe travel details (times of day, destinations, accommodations), weather, vegetation (and phenology), fieldwork at Connecticut Hills Grouse Refuge (New York), birds and mammal counts ordered by type since prior October, description of proposed grouse refuge at Howland Island (New York), and work with local officials and colleagues. There were visits to additional refuges, but handwriting is illegible.
