"The first volume of the new series of these Reports presents a favourable opportunity for a re-statement of their nature and function. They are not a medium for the publication of new results, but comprise copies of papers already published. These fall into three divisions. A, papers by the staff of the department or others working in it; B, communications by authors not in the department concerning wholly, or mainly, the material in the department; C, contributions to subject with which the department is much concerned, arising more or less as a result of its previous work or interest shown."--Preface, v. 21.
