Notes

The foreword in the text volume is signed by W.F. Exner, director of the Technologisches Gewerbe-Museum.

Issued in portfolio.

Details about the publication history of this edition are difficult to ascertain. The work appears to have been issued in parts between 1880 (title page date) and 1882 (date printed on the back cover of the publisher's portfolio).

Each plate consists of 3 thinly cut translucent samples of a single species of wood in natural colour, revealing the transverse, radial and tangential grain patterns.

The samples of wood are sandwiched inside two gilt-stamped layers of black cardstock paper, marked at bottom with the authenticating blind-embossed stamp of the TGM.

A Czech language edition (from the same place of publication and publisher), "Burkartova Sbírka nejdůležitějších evropských dřev užitečných ve význačných řezech," was issued in 1882.

The plates have captions giving the names of the wood species in German, French, Latin, English, Czech, Polish, and Hungarian.
