Notes

This field journal contains specimen lists and journal entries from Mearns last days in Arizona, his journey to Fort Snelling, Minnesota, and his collecting activities of birds and mammals in Fort Snelling from 22 January 1888 to 24 January 1892. The bulk of the journal documents activities in Fort Snelling, but notes on birds and mammals from Fort Verde (AZ), Dorsey (NM), Minnesota River, and other localities were captured along the route from Arizona to Minnesota. Collector numbers are not always in order but are approximately 3687 to 7565 (birds) and 664 to 1398 (mammals). A sketch of a mammal specimen (1411) is included. A list of specimens sent to the Army Medical Museum is also included (page 215). Some notes on other specimens such as fish, reptiles, insects, amphibians, and mollusks maybe found in this volume. Also included are miscellaneous scraps of notes, clippings, and correspondence (sometimes original, other times copied into journal entries). Some miscellaneous notes include "Notes on mammals and birds in the vicinity of Fort Snelling, Minnesota, June 1st to July 6th, 1888" and a list of birds from Fort Snelling 1890.
