Notes

In 1927 Alexander Wetmore traveled to Haiti and Dominican Republic to make natural history collections for the US National Museum. Materials include field notes, circa 23 March - 3 June 1927, correspondence, a photographed and hand drawn map, expense records, memorabilia, lists of supplies, list of US military serving in Haiti, fabric samples and reference materials. Statement of Expenditures is typed, and items are listed per day, chronologically; additionally includes destination and mode of transportation. Field notes have varying sorts of entries. Begins with specimen requests: includes a list of contacts and their requests, list of skeletons and specimens in alcohol wanted (Latin names used); and ones from Dominican Republic. Notebook then lists film, though descriptions of sites are terse. Dated entries sometimes list latitude and longitude, distance, bird lists (with time of day).Correspondence is in Spanish and English. Some discuss the ongoing selection process for Secretary of the Smithsonian; reptile specimen requests; botany specimens; a letter from W. L. Abbott (March 7 1927) describing the people and terrain of Dominican Republic; and letters from commercial suppliers.
