Plates by Nicholas Robert, Abraham Bosse and Louis de Chastillon. Frontispiece by Sebastien le Clerc.

Alternative titles with slight variations from Nissen. "Estampes pour servir l'Histoire des plantes" title variation from Donald A. Heald book dealer.

The work was never formally published or offered for public sale. The first issue of the plates was struck in 1685 soon after Nicholas Robert’s death to provide members of the Académie Royale des Sciences an example of the work in progress. 272 plates were completed at that time. In 1701 the completed work was printed with 319 plates. In 1719, engraver Jean Marchant added details of plant structure to the plates based upon the work of botanists Tournefort and Vaillant with occasional changes in plant names as well. Throughout the 18th century, the plates were occasionally printed and given as gifts. In 1786, the royal gift issue was published with the addition of the important frontispiece by Sebastien le Clerc and the full complement of 319 plates. Le Clerc (1637-1714) engraved the frontispiece in 1671 entitled [Louis XIV Visiting the Royal Academy of Sciences] for Claude Perrault (1613-1688), Memoires pour servir a l’Histoire Naturelle des Animaux (Paris: Sébastien Mabre-Cramoisy for the Imprimerie royale, 1671-1676). The final issue of the work printed in 1788 has a printed title page and table of plates however it does not have the frontispiece engraved by le Clerc.
