Notes

The 32 black-and-white photographs document field work completed on Malden Island, June 1968. Eight photographs taken by C. D. Hackman show an old reef with vegetation (Sesuvium) in the interior of the island, a grave marker for Malden (son of Abraham and Mary E. McCullough), a Polynesian grave stone, remnants of guano operation (corral, trestle, tracks, steam engine, old cars), and a 15-30 feet deep pool that contained at least 3 unidentified species of reef fish. Twenty photographs taken by R. B. Clapp show ruins of the guano operations, Malden grave marker, E. M. Walker grave marker, grave marker for nature employee, C. D. Hackman in foreground of graveyard, a Bristle-thighed Curlew, Red-footed Booby nests (one in rocky pothole, one in dead tree), skeleton of wild pig, unidentified vegetation (description suggests possibly Heliotropium), a Gray-backed Tern chick hiding in Sesuvium, several nesting areas of birds (Gray-backed Terns, Red-footed Boobies, Brown Boobies), a Red-footed Booby on nest in Sesuvium, a White Tern perched on a pipe, a White Tern egg on a wooden beam, House Mouse nest with 3 young, and a coastal view with remnants of military barracks. Four photographs taken by an unidentified photographer show coastal views with remnants of military barracks. The images have captions on the reverse side that list some or all of the following information: location, date, photographer, description, negative numbers (676, 683, 699, 709, 711, 715, 721, 727, 314A, 316A-327A, 329A-335A, 66B-69B), and unknown identifiers (e.g. M17A).
