Consists of 313 hand-coloured plates issued irregularly in 79 pts. beginning in 1835; hardly any sets of the fol. (1st ed.) issues (of which there are 2 or perhaps 3) are alike, as plates are often added, interchanged and duplicated (cf. Wood).

This set is unique (cf. separate entry for it in Wood's Introd. to the lit. of vertebrate zoology): v. 1-4: earliest printings of the 313 col. plates, together with 111 additional plates from the 1st and 2nd issues and 31 uncoloured impressions never published (i.e. 455 plates, in 4 vols. with title pages); bound in at end of v. 1 are 72 p. of text issued with the "2nd" octavo ed. but with a different print set-up (not usually found with the fol. copies); v. [5]-[8]: over 600 original watercolour and pencil drawings and sketches made for this work and bound in 4 vols. uniform with v. 1-4; v. [9]: 56 pink wrappers from the 1st and 2nd issues of the 1st ed., dated, partly in ms., from no. 1, Mar. 1835 to no. 80, Sept. 1839, and 41 buff wrappers, undated, from the 2nd ed.
