"In the fall of 1940, the Geological Society of America and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography jointly sponsored a scientific expedition to the Gulf of California ... With the auxiliary schooner 'E.W. Scripps' as a base of operations, the work of the expedition was mainly concentrated regionally in four relatively small areas, namely: Tiburon Island and Guaymas, Sonora, and Carmen Island and Concepción Bay, Baja California, Mexico."
