Plates consist of nature prints (in this case, prints made by intaglio electrotype plates produced from a mold of the object). Most are printed in one color, with additional etched illustrations of details in the same color and lettering in black, some are printed in 2 (or rarely 3) colors à la poupée, and some include hand coloring; some appear to have tonal areas in aquatint.

Numbered plates include 22 1/2, 47A/B, 59A/B/C, 68A/B, 69A/B, 70A/B/C, 91A/B/C, 92A/B, and 206B (preceded by 206); the last nature-printed plate (v. 4, facing p. 213) is unnumbered. Copies may vary slightly in plate numbers bearing repeated numbers, and in the total number of plates. An additional unnumbered, uncolored engraved plate is found preceding the glossary in vol. 4 (facing page [303]).

Each volume has added engraved title page printed in black, with a cartouche containing a nature print printed in color ink. The engraved title pages are dated 1859 in all volumes.
