"Appendix. Observations on the geology of York County, Pennsylvania, by Thos. G. Clemson, read October 29, 1834"--13 p., at end of pt. 1.

The principal object of the society was to promote the establishment of a state geological survey; the first Geological Survey of Pennsylvania was authorized in 1836. No further record of the society has been found, and it apparently ceased to exist after its object had been accomplished; its members (who took no part in the survey) joined in the organization of a new, national society in 1840, the Association of American Geologists, out of which developed, in 1848, the American Association for the Advancement of Science--Cf. J.P. Lesley, Historical sketch of geological explorations in Pennsylvania and other states. 1876 (Second Geological Survey of Pennsylvania: 1874-'5-'6), p. A29-A52. (The Geological Society of Pennsylvania).

Some of the plates hand-colored.

Errata: p. [180] of pt. 1. Errata slip tipped in before p. 253, pt. 2.
