Abstract
"A revision of the species of bats (Chiroptera) occurring in the Republic of the Sudan (the former Anglo-Egyptian Sudan) is presented. Sixty-six species are definitely recognized as occurring within the boundaries of the country, whereas some 38 others are known from nearby areas and may cross its borders. All eight of the widespread Old World families are represented. Most of the Sudan lies within the Ethiopian region but a relatively small area in the north is best allocated to the arid southwestern Palearctic. The bat fauna is grouped into nine ecogeographical categories (forest, forest-savanna, savanna, east African, desert, savanna-Palearctic, desert-Palearctic, Palearctic, and unclassified), and the Sudanese distribution of the species in each category is summarized. A number of interesting taxonomic problems are discussed, but the final resolution of most of them will involve analysis outside the Sudan"--P. 355.
