Abstract

Improved techniques developed for mass rearing Anopheles albimanus Wiedemann resulted in an 80% increase in production to ca. 4200 pupae per rearing tray. The increase was brought about by (1) using thermostatically-controlled, electric heating tapes to achieve more accurate water temperature in shelved rearing trays and by (2) volumetrically measuring dried mosquito eggs so the rearing process in the trays could be initiated with greater uniformity of numbers. These procedures resulted in more uniform larval development as well as increased production. The heating tapes provide an economical means of maintaining rearing temperatures above ambient levels. These significant advances to practically any scale of rearing and to other mosquito species.
