Consultants in medical entomology selected from affluent developed countries and assigned to developing countries in tropical and subtropical areas are usually technically competent but are often less successful than anticipated. The reasons for this are insensitivity to cultural and religious differences, a lack of understanding of social and economic constraints and an inability to adjust to poverty and different standards of sanitation. Experience in the field reduces these problems.
