Notes
Typescript and handwritten.
The field book includes a handwritten list of birds with both their scientific name, common name and locations either observed or collected. Also included is a hypothetical list for birds not previously recorded. Remaining content is typed with handwritten notations. Book contains detailed information for each bird listed including range of location, description, habitat, collecting guidelines and native name. The endpapers include notes in a hand other than Macmillan. Macmillan led the Whitney South Sea Expedition from 1935 to 1940. His wife Joy accompanied him and acted as assistant for part of the expedition.
Lindsay Macmillan was trained by A.J. Marshall, a well-known Australian ornithologist. Before joining the expedition, Macmillan was already well-versed in skinning and collecting bird specimens. He left the Whitney expedition to join the Australian military during World War II.
Cataloged through a 2015 Leon Levy Foundation Archives grant.
