Notes

Handwritten diary composed by William Bartram between 1802 and 1822, towards the end of Bartram's life. There are no entries in the diary between September 1808 and January 1818, except for two 1814 entries. "Calendar of Natural History, Memorable Events, etc." is written on the detached cover of the diary. The diary contains a record of weather conditions, and observations of blooming plants and trees, birds, insects, and other animals as seen at the Bartram family home, along the Schuylkill River in Kingsessing, an area then outside the city of Philadelphia. The diary is sometimes referred to as William Bartram's garden diary or meteorological diary.
