ENG This field book documents Nelson's field work in the North Slope region (including Tupkak) and possibly along the north west coast of Alaska between 10 March and 3 April 1880. During this time, Nelson was on general assignment to study the zoology of Alaska, as well as geology, meteorology, and ethnology. This notebook contains ethnological and natural history observations. Natural history observations are primarily of birds, mammals, and plants. Nelson provides detailed description of his daily events and surrounding environment through which he travels. Nelson's ethnological observations include notes on song, dance (related sketch is included), and language (possibly Iñupiaq or another Inuit language). Populations of villages Nelson visits are noted. Weather information, including temperatures, is also included.
