annotation We must say tht we ‹agree› take nearly th same general view as Frank does abut th manner & means by which all th parts of plants adapt themselves to th position in which thy stand & to external agencies; but with this somwht important difference tht we now know tht each grwng part is continually circumntatng , ie bendng to all sides, & if it be advantages to a part & to th plant, for it to bend in any direction with respect to th remainder of th plant, or to any external agency, ,if this agency produces any effect which can be perceived by th plnt, then th circmntatng movemt can be modified to or for such agency, or th time «no darkns may be cause, but not of direction.» of such movemt can be modified in relation to such agency as in th shape of ‹Pl› Leaves.—
