Correspondence from John Bachman to John Torrey, dated 1840, informing Torrey that Bachman has shipped him, via the ship "Sultan," a box of plant specimens which "contains all the plants which we could find in Elliott agreeable to your list," and offers additional specimens should Torrey desire them. He goes on to discuss various works in progress, including Torrey's own, Holbrook's "North American Herpetology," and Audubon and Bachman's "Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America." He expresses his pleasure at hearing that Asa Gray has returned from Europe and can resume assisting Torrey, and laments the fact that "to study the nat. hist. [sic] of our own country we must go to Europe."
