Notes:

Correspondence from Joseph Burke to John Torrey, dated 1853. Though they are not acquainted Burke sends Torrey an unidentified specimen of Hibiscus he has found locally, assuming by Torrey's reputation he will be interested. He describes the situation and circumstances in which he found the plant, and a little of his experiences by way of introduction, mentioning his previous experience as a collector of both plants and animals, as well as the loss of both his books and his herbarium. Burke offers to send Torrey any other plants he might desire from the area, as well as insect specimens.
