Notes

Correspondence from William Marriott Canby to John Torrey, dated 1864-1869, discussing some specimens he has sent Torrey, and various personal matters. In the first letter Canby says he has recently received a photograph of Asa Gray and requests a photo of Torrey as well, since "[the] names of Torrey & Gray are so inseparably connected in North American Botany, that the picture of one seems incomplete wihout the other." Later Canby regrets he cannnot join Torrey on a trip to Long Island due to previous commitments that have piled up while he was in Florida. Obsolete and unresolved plant names mentioned include Amphianthus, Oreophila myrtifolia, Pachystima, and Pachystima myrsinites.
