Notes

The preface is dated on page [3] (1st group): Peking, December 17th, 1870.

Originally published in several successive issues of volume 3 (1870-1871) of The Chinese recorder and missionary journal.

According to Fa-ti Fan, in British naturalists in Qing China (2009; page 213), the eight leaves of plates were reproduced from Qijun Wu's Zhi wu ming shi tu kao.

The nomenclature is transcribed in "Kuan-hua" or Mandarin dialect, adopting the mode of spelling in Mr. Wade's Peking syllabary (preface, page [3], 1st group).

Text in double columns.

Errata on page 51.

The plates are printed on four double leaves of rice paper, folded at the fore-edge, with brief captions in Chinese.
