Notes
Correspondence from Sarah Swain Forbes to John Torrey, undated (probably between 1850 and 1873), thanking Torrey for his "account of the Mexican Hand Tree." Forbes reminisces about a specimen of the tree that her father Stephen Hathaway remembered growing in the garden of his neighbor Dr. Samuel Mitchill in White Street in New York City, and a picture she has of its bloom, painted by her mother Lydia Swain Hathaway.
