Notes

Engraved title page.

The dedication is dated March 21, 1793 (page [5], 1st group).

"Apparently a reissue of the English text edition of 1792, with the addition of a dedication and the French text." --English short title catalogue.

"From the Shakspeare Press, by W. Bulmer & Co." --Colophon, page 33 (2nd group).

The title page is signed: Tomkins scr., Vincent scu.

"The preface to the French version terminates with an announcement, which is wanting from the English version, that the author had in preparation a work on birds, to be published in 1793, on the same lines as the 'Universal conchologist.' --British Museum (Natural History) catalogue.

"The dedication to Charles IV, King of Spain, and the Indies, is dated March 21, 1793 and the paper and plates in some instances, carry 1801 watermarks. Although watermark dates cannot always be relied upon, it does not seem as if this book actually appeared in 1792. The title page was probably engraved in 1792 and used later when the forty-two plates were finished. This no doubt took place between 1793 and 1801 ... On the other hand, the 1801 signatures may have been printed in 1801 and bound with signatures printed previously." --H.B. Weiss, "Thomas Martyn's 'English entomologist'", Journal of the New York Entomological Society, v. 46, no. 3 (September 1938), pages 322-323.

Plates 1-42 are hand-colored.
