Notes:

Correspondence from George Engelmann to John Torrey, dated 1841-1862. The first letter in the collection, dated January 22, 1844, is actually a short note addressed to Peter V. Le Roy, directing him to a set of exsiccatae being sold by Wiley & Putnam. The balance of the correspondence is addressed to John Torrey: Engelmann keeps Torrey abreast of the comings and goings of botanists exploring and collecting throughout the western frontier, travelling with the Railroad and Boundary Expeditions, the U.S. military, and independently. He peppers him with questions regarding a wide range of plants, particularly Asclepias, Euphorbia, and the Cactaceae. In later years he relates the events of a long trip to Europe. Obsolete plant names mentioned include Acerates, Acerates longifolia, Cactus, Echinocactus whipplei, Enslenia, Mammillaria simplex, Metastelma, Nelumbium, Roulinia, Sarcostemma, and Vesicaria.
