Notes
This collection consists of a small booklet containing a list of plants. Information is arranged in five columns and includes Latin plant names, two different numbers, and two abbreviations. Nineteen pages have been written on. A note by Reed Clark Rollins at the back of the booklet provides provenance. It is possible the list is an inventory of Peirce’s herbarium.
George Peirce was born in 1808 in New Salem, Massachusetts to Warren and Lydia (Farrar) Peirce. He graduated from Harvard College and became a physician. Peirce married Maria C. Haskell, the widowed daughter of his neighbors, Joseph and Catharine Osgood, in 1859. He was an amateur botanist and made collections in the vicinity of New Salem. Peirce died on October 14, 1896 in Petersham. His personal herbarium was presented to the New England Botanical Club by Gregory Smith and Allen B. Cook in 1947.
