The photograph album documents work Alexander Wetmore conducted in Alaska (1911), Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands (1911-1912) gathering data on economic status and geographical distribution of birds and mammals for the United States Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Biological Survey. Images are arranged chronologically, captioned and sometimes dated. The first section, includes subject matter: towns and forests around Seattle, the vessel on which he sailed, terrain (beaches, valleys, mountains) and bodies of water (rivers, channels, bays) seen during voyage, structures (a barrabarra) and scenes around Unalaska, nesting sites of birds (Latin names used), examples of local vegetation, gun drills on USRC Tahoma, examples of local industry (salmon cannery), campsites, eruption of Shishaldon Volcano [Shishaldin Volcano], portraits crew of Tahoma (with names). Locations include vicinity of Seattle, Vancouver Island, Aleutian Islands, Unalaska, Alaska. Images of Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands include postcards and photographs portraying towns, candid images of local people at work and in local markets and on farms.
