The journal documents Vernon Orlando Bailey's fieldwork in Louisiana, North Carolina, Texas, June 4 - July 29, 1925. The entries are dated and describe travel details from Washington, DC (destinations, times of day, mode of travel, accommodations), weather, vegetation (including crops), terrain, daily activities, descriptions of muskrat traps (including dimensions), specimen collecting (including mammals, reptiles), observed wildlife and their behavior (with subheadings of type of animal, i.e. snakes, sometimes with measurements), observations of area fires, and results of specimen processing (stomach contents). Includes a sketch of nest and egg. Specimen information includes type, contents, weight, and measurements. Includes summaries of observations by local inhabitants on wildlife as well as comments and observations about trapping methods. There is a list of muskrat foods, where they are found, and whether used in cages. Locations are often along wetlands and include but are not limited to Atchafalaya Bay, Louisiana; Port Arthur marshes in Texas.
