Charles D. Walcott records observations of geological formations in Kanab Canyon in during September 5-October 7, 1882 for the U.S. Geological Survey. Entries are listed and headed by dates. He notes the travel progress, weather, characteristics of stone observed (color, texture), detailed sketches, and fossils observed and collected. He focuses on Permian and Carboniferous fossils and layers. Journal entries fill the first third of the notebook.
