Notes
Binder's title.
The LX engraved leaves of plates, and most of the 100 leaves of original drawings, were signed by J.H. Richard and/or R. Metzeroth. Some of the original drawings include information added in pencil or ink, such as the scientific name of the depicted animal, the location where the animal was found, the date of the sketch or the capture of the animal, and the catalog number of the corresponding specimen in the collections of the Smithsonian Institution.
Manuscript notes written in pencil and ink in an unknown hand appear at the front of the volume and on the leaf preceding the plates, reading: "Pacific railroad & Mexican boundary survey, mammals, by S.F. Baird and J.S. Newberry, texts and plates" and "Pacific R.R. survey, mammals, plain plates 1-60".
Most of the original drawings have been mounted on blank leaves of card stock paper; some of the drawings have been done on the versos of scrap paper and printer's waste.
A copy of Baird's Catalogue of North American mammals, chiefly in the museum of the Smithsonian Institution (Washington, D.C. : Smithsonian Institution, 1857, 21 p.) is bound in at the front of the volume.
Collection of engraved plates and the hand-drawn and hand-colored original illustrations prepared for Baird's publication, Mammals of North America (Philadelphia : J.B. Lippincott, 1857-1859), together with the "Explanation of the plates" and "Systematic list of illustrations" excerpted from the printed text (p. [737]-757). Some of the engraved plates were also published as part of the official Pacific Coast railroad survey reports for California, Oregon, and for the 32nd, 35th, 41st, and 47th parallels, as indicated by the captions on the plates.
