Notes
Correspondence from Edward D. Merriam to John Torrey, dated 1853. Merriam's letters are full of youthful enthusiasm, both for botany and his new medical practice. In his first letter, dated August 29, 1853, he assures Torrey that, despite being extremely busy, he has not abandoned botany or the sciences-- he has just ordered a large shipment of scientific texts from Europe-- and tells him he has prepared a package of plants to send him. Despite his medical responsibilities, he cannot help fantasizing about going on a plant collecting expedition. In his second letter, dated October 12 of the same year, he asks Torrey for his help in securing a position on William Marcy's next expedition.
