In 2001, a Desert Monitoring Team was hired by the Bureau of Land Management to monitor the effects of Off-Highway Vehicles (OHV's) on the desert ecosystem. One of their tasks was to complete a survey for desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) in the Jawbone-Butterbredt Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC). This survey began in the summer of 2002 (from June to October) and continued in the summer of 2003 (from July to September). As of October 2003, 35 percent of the survey has been completed.
