The Joint Fire Science Program (JFSP) was authorized and funded by Congress in 1998 to provide scientific information and tools in support of fuels and fire management programs. The program is a partnership of six Federal wildland management and research agencies, including the United States Department of Agriculture's Forest Service and the Department of the Interior's Bureau of Indian Affairs, Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and U.S. Geological Survey. An appointed 10-member governing board, representing the partner agencies, provides program oversight and management.
