Notes:

The field notes and diary document Bohumil Shimek's work in Indiana, Illinois, April - July, 1906; and Iowa, Nebraska, August 30 - October 23, 1926. Pages are numbered. Lists from 1906 are sometimes interspersed with those from 1926. Entries describe a trip from Iowa City, Iowa, to New Harmony, Indiana. Entries describe method and times of travel; list of photographs taken (subject and location); observations of trees (with type and description of environment); wood specimens collected; and lists of plants by terrain type (riverbanks, hills, prairie). Includes descriptions of layers exposed by cuts into terrain for construction of railroad. Cuts are numbered. Most entries are headed with date and location of observations. Descriptions include composition, color, appearance, and fossils (shells). Includes sketches and geological sections. Some notes are crossed out. Notes from 1926 describe social events; lists of plant specimens collected; trees and flowering plants observed; weather; synopsis of a speech given; and lists of plants observed between destinations usually along a railroad. In the back of the notebook he lists expenses per location. There is a leaf specimen. Locations include the vicinity of, but not limited to, Peoria, Grayville, Rockford, Illinois; Milligan, Nebraska; and Ottumwa, Iowa.
