The field notes and diary document Bohumil Shimek's work in Iowa, August 29 - September 3, 1906. Pages are numbered. Entries are dated and often headed with location. Entries describe observations of cuts into the terrain made during the construction of a railroad line as well as along rivers. Descriptions include estimated measurements, layers, composition, fossils, color, appearances, soil drifts, trees seen and where, and notes on photographs taken.
