Notes

Publisher from colophon.

Numerous woodcuts of various sizes (repeats). Most are after Jost Amman, though those in the extensive section on bits (O2r-X4v) are by another hand. T.p. vignette. On recto of 2nd leaf are the arms of Hans Philips Landschad von und zu Steinach, to whom the work is dedicated. In the section entitled "Mummerey" (pi2r-C2r) are depicted horsemen and others in a variety of costumes (Jupiter, a Moor, Summer, etc.).

The double-page plate of a tournament following N4 is signed IA and dated 1564. The tailpiece that occurs on H4v, N4v, a4v, Rr6r, and Ss4v is by Amman (O'Dell, Jost Ammans Buchschmuck, e1), as is Feyerabend's device with Fame at the colophon (O'Dell, f20). There are a number of block cutters' initials: FV with small knife, LF, MB, MB with small knife, MF with small knife. Decorated gothic initials, but the R is provided by Amman's historiated roman initial depicting Ruth (O'dell, c45). It occurs five times, with one occurrence of another historiated R (t1v).

Signatures: pi² [pi1 + )(²] A-K⁴, ²A-Z⁴, a-z⁴ Aa-Qq⁴ Rr-Ss⁶.
