Notes

Issued in 3 parts between 1833-1835. The title page is dated 1834, as it was originally intended for the work to be complete in 2 parts.

Contains 33 full-page hand-colored lithographs by Edward Lear (10) and John Gould and Elizabeth Gould (23), printed by C. Hullmandel. The illustrations were colored by or under the supervision of Gabriel Bayfield; see Jackson, Christine E. Dictionary of bird artists of the world, 1999, page 151. Each is accompanied by leaf of descriptive letterpress, some printed on both sides.

Each leaf of plates is accompanied by a leaf of descriptive letterpress and a blank guard-sheet; some of the text leaves are printed on both sides.

In some copies, "Ramphastos vitellinus" is signed by Lear in the image and dated April 1833, but the engraved caption assigns the work to J. & E. Gould instead.

Plates preceded by title page, dedication leaf for Professor Temminck of Leyden, and list of subscribers (3 unnumbered leaves in total); and Preface, Introduction, Addenda to the introduction, and "Synopsis specierum" (13 pages on 7 unnumbered leaves). Plates divided into two groups, genus Ramphatos and genus Pteroglossus, with each group preceded by unnumbered leaf with notes on the genus. In the second edition (1854), 5 genera are distinguished.

The second edition ([1852]-1854) contains 51 full-page hand-colored lithographs by John Gould and H.C. Richter. Four of the plates are copies or free copies of the lithographs in this edition: Ramphastos culminatus, originally drawn and lithographed by Edward Lear; Ramphastos dicolorus, Aulacoramphus Derbianus (Pteroglossus Derbianus in this edition) and Aulacoramphus haematopygius (Pteroglossus haematopygius in this edition), originally drawn and lithographed by John Gould and Elizabeth Gould. Of the others, 28 are new renderings (a few loosely based on plates in this edition) of the remaining species represented in this edition, except for one here omitted; 19 represent newly identified species (in one case, newly distinguished).

Twenty of the 1854 plates, representing the newly identified species and one species newly distinguished as two, were reprinted in 1855 with their accompanying letterpress as a supplement to this edition, under the title: Supplement to the first edition of A monograph of the Ramphastidae, or family of toucans.

"Observations on the anatomy of the toucan," by R. Owen (on 2 unnumbered leaves, printed on both sides, typically bound in at the end of the volume) is accompanied by a full-page uncolored lithograph, signed G. Scharf del. et lithog., printed by Hullmandel.
