Correspondence from Buckingham Smith to John Torrey, dated 1850-1868, seeking Torrey's expertise to identify a number of references he has found in various ethnological sources for plants used by native peoples in Mexico and California. The third document consists of an excerpt from "The Young Voyagers" by Mayne Reid, written on the black pages of an invitation to a meeting of the American Ethnological Society. Obsolete and unresolved plant names mentioned include Viburnum oxycoccos.
