Harris Perley Gould, a former head of the Division of Fruit and Vegetable Crops and Diseases, Bureau of Plant Industry, Soils and Agricultural Engineering, U.S. Department of Agriculture, died October 17, 1946 in Washington D.C. H.P. Gould was born at North Bridgton, Maine, September 6, 1871, He was graduated from the University of Maine with the B.S. degree in 1893 and received the M.S.A. degree at Cornel University in 1897. From 1901 he served as assistant entomologist and horticulturist at the Maryland Agricultural Experiment Station. Upon organization of the Bureau of Plant Industry in 1901, Mr. Gould joined the staff as assistant pomologist and was actively engaged in horticultural research and administration until his retirement in 1941.

"Apple varieties notes based on observations recorded by the writer H.P. Gould, during the years 1922 to 1931 on specimens sent from the orchard to the Division of Fruits and Vegetable Crops and Diseases, or its antecedent pomological component unit where studies were made. Observations were recorded on but very few varieties for the entire 10-year period; more often they were limited to not over 4 to 6 seasons, or even a smaller number of years in many cases ... The numbers given for descriptions and paintings are the Pomology numbers under which the varieties illustrated were recorded in the Pomology Journal of Receipt (housed in the National Archives)."
