The envelope, loose black-and-white photographs, and album pages document field work completed during the Southern Island Cruise 1 on Howland Island, 1963. The images in the envelope have captions on the reverse side listing a combination of location, date (March 1963), cruise number, and possibly negative identifier. Subject matter shows island terrain (coastline), and close-up images of wildlife (birds of various ages, hermit crabs). Loose images have captions with similar information, including photographer and location on island. Images show variety of birds of various ages in colonies and alone, including Sooty Terns, Great Frigatebirds, Lesser Frigatebirds, Blue-faced Boobies,Red-footed Boobies, Brown Boobies, and Masked Boobies. Also includes a few images of vegetation and other wildlife (black-tipped shark, rock crabs), and various structures. Includes one image of guano from Lesser Frigatebird roost. The two album pages include captioned images of birds, terrain, and crabs on Howland Island.
